Pete Russell – The Composer of “A cause de l’automne”

aqui en español

By now, everyone should already know Pete Russell by his name. Well, at least every Alizée fan should know him! As we have told earlier, he got involved in the new album project of Alizée during the spring of 2012, and eventually a song composed by him was selected to be the first single from the new album!

The Background

So, how did this all happen? Well, as mentioned before Sony Music Entertainment (later Sony), the record house of Alizée, contacted a British label DWB Music asking if they’d have anything interesting to offer for Alizée’s new album. They were particulary looking for some nice 60s catchy wibes with a modern production feeling for the album. Unfortunately (or fortunately for us) they did not have anything to go, so they inqueried their musicians working for them if anyone would have something to offer. This is where Pete got involved in the process. He was contacted in February 2012 and he wrote the original English song called “Never Again”. It wasn’t sure until in May that this song would be selected to be one of the songs for Alizée, and it was already late June, just before the release of the single, when Pete was told it would be the new single of Alizée. Pete was never in touch with Alizée herself but everything was handled between the record companies behind the scenes. He would be, of course, happy to meet her someday. If not earlier, at least in a concert!

The Song

Falling from Grace

Of course, by now, you have noticed that something is wrong here. “Never Again”? But that isn’t the single of Alizée! No, it is not exactly. It is the original version of the song. For reason or another, Sony decided to re-write the song in French. Possibly because it’s for French markets or maybe because it would be more natural for Alizée to sing it. The version was titled “A cause de l’automne” and it appears to be written by Jean-Jacques Goldman Thomas Boulard. The music itself was not touched but it is exactly the same as in original “Never Again” song, composed by Pete Russell.

The Story of the Song

Ever wondered what was the original song about? The French version we can hear and read, tells about a story of two lovers who grew apart from each other and finally break up. But was the English version the same? No, it was not. Unfortunately due to complicated bureaucracy reasons of modern music business, it’s not possible to release the original English lyrics. Only Sony could do it but it’s unlikely to happen (unless we actually do get also the English version of the song on the new album!). However, Pete was able to summarize the main plot and the meaning of the original song for us!

“Never Again” tells a story of a man’s infidelity toward a woman. The woman, no matter how crushed by this incident, tells him that she can forgive it but with one condition only; the man should never again repeat his mistake.

So, in a way, the both versions deals about problems in love. In the French version there is nothing to fix anymore, they have fell out of love already. They can simply forget everything and move on. In the English version there is still hope but the future is uncertain. They could live happily ever after, but there might always be the pain of what happened and it could cause the final break up.

Final Words

So there you go… Even if we will never hear the original song, we at least know what it was all about. Also this should shred some light on the backgrounds of the song, how it ended up to be Alizée’s first single.

Thanks a lot for Pete Russell for the information he was able to share.

Falling from Grace

Some of the other work by Pete Russell he could share with us involves a song originally written for Rob Williams but which never was submitted for him. Luckily, the song did not get forgotten but it has been released, so you can hear it. You can find it on iTunes for example (Falling from Grace on UK iTunes for 0,79 pounds).

This Time of Year (Remember It's Christmas)

Another song, a beautiful christmas song, has been released also. The song is called This Time of Year (Remember It’s Christmas) and features Tori Beaumont. You can also find on itunes (This Time of Year (Remember It’s Christmas) on UK iTunes for 0,79 pounds).

Happy listening!

Falling from Grace

Falling from Grace

This Time of Year (Remember It's Christmas)

Otra canción, una bella canción de navidad ya ha sido publicada también, la canción se llama “This time of year (Remember it´s christmas) cantada por tori Beaumont. pueden encontrarla en iTunes (This Time of Year (Remember It’s Christmas) en UK iTunes por 0,79 libras).
